Default Cooling system - reverse flush?

Afternoon,

My 84 has been off the road for a couple of years and I was considering getting the cooling system, in it's entirety, reverse flushed. The problem I am having is finding someone who can "do the flush", as (apparently) now a days you have to use some sort of a machine that no one in my area (that I can find) seems to have.

I remember doing my own reverse flushes, with a garden hose, years and years ago and didn't think it was all that difficult or technical, not to the point where a "special machine" was required.

Anyway my question, does anyone know of a place that does reverse flushing in the Steuben County NY area or northern PA?

I would think most dealerships have that machine, well worth the price they charge.
Our dealership had one, and it sucked all the fluid out, and pumped fresh back in with no air bubbles.
That and engine flush machine to clean the block of oil were big money makers.

Thanks mate - you mind if I ask what they charged you for the flush?

Cheers.

Most oil change places have the machine and can do it. I paid 79 bucks to have mine done. WORTH IT.

For $80, I would agree. It's not like you can let the coolant run down the drain. You'd have to collect it and recycle it or dump it to a place that accepts the stuff.

Thanks and $80 isn't bad, I was expecting it to be a lot more than that especially from a stealership.

Have always used the $10 Prestone kit that tee's into a heater hose. Coolant disposal can be an issue.

That looks pretty straight forward and a cheaper option. Might get one regardless of whether I get the engine flushed "professionally" or not.

Than ks for the tip.

Cheaper does not include the coolant or distilled water. Also doesn't include you collecting the coolant and disposal.

None of the local parts stores will take antifreeze. i asked ADEM what to do with it. the answer was:

Currently, in the State of Alabama, waste generated by a household is exempt from regulation as a hazardous waste. Although a municipal landfill is an acceptable method of disposal for waste antifreeze, other options for disposal should be investigated in
order to divert antifreeze away from land disposal. Alternatives to land disposal include reuse, recycling, and household hazardous waste collection programs. Some businesses accept used antifreeze from do-it-yourselfers for recycling. If you must dispose of waste antifreeze, absorb the liquid with a non-biodegradable absorbent such as sand or kitty litter prior to placement in a landfill.

pretty hard to believe in this day.

Do anything BUT don't get caught. If you are unwilling to risk it, hire it out. I don't since I have dogs so this goes to the shop. If I didn't, I wouldn't mind doing in the driveway and let the rain or garden hose wash off any spills.

Thanks everyone and, as mentioned, I am going to get the flush done by "someone" to start with. After that, I might do them myself as I used to.

Although this may not be the "populist belief", the disposal of the antifreeze/household waste is a little blown out of perspective in my opinion. Granted, large amounts of potentially harmful waste might cause an issue over an extended period of time but, if I am prepared to dispose of such waste on my property then, I believe, that is my prerogative or the prerogative of the landowner especially when it comes to liquids; solids are another issue altogether.

End of the day the bottom line is don't get caught doing whatever it is you decide to do.
