18 yr old + corvette = disaster!!

Dad, can I take your new (newer) 91 vette to pick up bob? Sure. Be careful etc. the things you normally would say. Now let me explain a little here. I taught her how to drive a vette, and how to have respect for one. She had been driving mom’s 88 for a year and her own 81 for a summer between college breaks. She knew more than most 16-18 yr old kids did. I used to take her to parking lots, especially when it was raining, and have her practice slides, spins, etc. she did very well! We were stopped a couple of times by the sheriffs dept. and told to leave. We would argue, where can I teach my kid how to drive, almost all Drivers Ed., has been removed from our schools! They said we will ticket you next time. Wrong solution! (Lucky a good friend of mine is a Capt. in the sheriffs dept.)
I am also a pilot and an ex safety officer and thought I had all the bases covered, well I didn’t. The base I missed, and could not have taught, was EXPERIENCE! So, moms and dads don’t, please don’t, make the mistake I made, It isn’t worth it! Let them drive a dodge Daytona, or an old vw, they’re gutless, but for god sake don’t say here drive a 300hp sports car. You might as well hand them a gun.
Just look at the pic (URL) and close your eyes and visualize you and your wife coming over the hill to see this. Why do we bring up our kids and at some point we jeopardize it all with a little cruise in a CORVETTE. I know this could have happened in almost any car. But there are only a few built low to the ground with hp and can get under the guard rail. We checked with the state and the guard rail was at the correct height.
Closing comment, they both survived!! Thank god. 4 hrs hospitalization. Daughter was back in college Monday night suited up to play div 2 volleyball. Coach said no you are not released from the doctor yet. Her boyfriend was out of commission for 3 days. Both still have enough glass imbedded in their faces to replace a few windows in a smaller car.
Since this, my daughter has run at Watkins Glenn 8 times and beat me all eight times. 3 other races she also beat me all 3. She’s now an accountant for PWH (price water house) and drives a beautiful 95 yellow coupe. It hurts to grow old.
People THINK b-4-u act. And ask yourself, is it worth the risk?
How many times have you, the parent, been involved in a close call with your vette? Now think, would your 16 yr old have handled it ok, and survived? EXPERIENCE helps!
PS
Anyone need rear end or front suspension from a 90 vette?

Wow - I'm young and drive a vette. Granted it's not quite as powerful as the one your daughter was driving, but I haven't gotten into any sort of accidents and such yet. Luckily. I think I am going to go to some parking lots and practice the spins and slides....
I can't even begin to imagine. I probably would have hurled.
Glad everyone survived. :blueangel:
Well, almost everyone :(

Thanks for sharing your story. I am sure we all have learned a major lesson. Since everyone is okay, did you replace that 90 vette with something else.
How did she get into that predicament anyway? Looks like she went in perpendicular to the rail on a highway.

I too am a tactical driving instructor and teach the drug & alcohol (new drivers) course and a safety course.
Did the same with my son. Drug/alcohol, pylon/skid course in an empty school lot and a ton of tandem driving. Then sent him to drivers ed!
1st car was my old 93 SHO. His latest (got it for him on his 17 th birthday) is an 87 Grand national.
Although he's a pretty level headed kid and all, he's STILL a kid! :yesnod:
Like his dad, he has a need for speed and is all into mods. I worry about him until I hear the door open. :(
Think I'll show him this link.
Again...Thank God they're ok

This is the 1st time I have had this on the forum. Too many parents just letting their children drive these cars without any training. I had a hard time writing the piece. a hard lump in my throat every 3 sec, tears the whole time. But if I prevent just 1 kid from getting hurt, I will have done my job.
She ha d a cop right behind her as he was chasing a speeder when she entered the right lane of a 2 lane on ramp. The speeder tried to take her out in hopes of having the cop stop chasing them. Well, she saw it coming and tried to avoid them, she did manage to do that but panicked when she got by them and hit the gas instead of the brake and froze until the car, because of the great amount of hp, and traction, had driven itself as far as it could under the guard rails. They had their seat belts on; they would defiantly have been killed if they didn't. He was pinned under the rail by his face for 45 min.
I made her get back in a vette the following spring. And she went to the Glenn to a driving school and when the instructor had her out 2-3 times, he told me she was a natural and wanted to put her in an advanced class. I said no. Too much for me, too soon. We ran 8 times that day and I never saw her again after the 2nd turn! She’s good.
Please don’t think this can’t happen to your kid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I/she/he were LUCKY this time. Hope there is never another time.
Love your kids, let them get as many years of experience as possible before you give them a more deadly 3000#’s of high hp steel! Please. These things are NOT toys.
