Has anyone replaced the positive battery cable that runs from the battery to the (ecm) starter? The GM Factory Service Manual indicates it runs under the brake booster, along the firewall (low) and around the engine corner to the starter. I was just wondering how hard it is to replace - easier from the bottom than top? I tried to trace the cable routing today and lost it right after it ran under the brake booster!
And if you have replaced one, what's the cable cost?
Sounds like you have one of the 1990-93 Vettes.....
If so, loosen the cable, tie something to it (I used a piece of clothesline) and thread it down to the starter. Tie and tape the new cable onto the rope and start threading it back up. Lots easier if you have someone helping. And right behind the right head, there could be a clamp attached to the bell-housing which is fun to get to.
Thanks for the idea! In the GM service book, I noticed the clamp on the bellhousing and "imagined" how I'm going to get at that... there is also one more clamp on the firewall right after the brake booster that I can't even see! I already have new wire-loom to wrap the new cable. I'm a big guy with hands like baseball mits so I'm not looking forward to this... I guess the trick will be to loosen those clamps and hope they pull through along with the cable - then reverse the process after putting the clamps on the new cable.
Ordered the new cable from my local GM dealer. The same cable for my wife's Intrepid is $128.65 so I expected the worst. Both myself and the parts guy were shocked to learn the cable was $8.40! In the microfiche it was about 6' long, w/2 wires on the battery end (one for ECM) so it looked like the right cable... we'll see later this week!

Funny. I'm not small but always had hands that could get into tight places. One Saturday we were working a B1 bomber and they had installed a part in the wing and forgot the connector on top. They hunted me down and I hooked it up for them. Saved them about 4 hours work pulling it back out. My reward a cold frosty beverage.
