Sure brings back memories of a earlier, simpler time. Was tooling down the boulevard today. Drove past the long past (torn down) Sun Drive In. Some of us remember those car drive ins. Hell, had to count back the years........ 45 years ago, man I'm getting old. Use to drags race up the avenue every Friday night with the 70 Torino 429SCJ. We all hang out at the drive in with our muscle cars. It was the place to be. Remember this one guy, he had a blower on a 69 Chevelle. Hedberg was his name, died a good 10 years ago.
"I went to Columbia Heights High School in the 60's, and our hangout was the Sun Drive Inn on Central Avenue. It had a big parking lot with colored globe lights and lots of atmosphere.
Your order was delivered to the car in a cardboard tray printed with the Sun logo. The Sun Burger was delicious, and so big and juicy it came wrapped in foil.
I'm told that Sun Burgers are still served at Shaw's Bar and Grill in Northeast Minneapolis."

that's a by gone time in almost every city/town in the country. Back in the mid to late 60s it was McDonals/Shoneys out on Macon road in Columbus Georgia. Sit there , chop on a burger, watch the local hot cars drive by.
My Corvette is my personal time machine. I get behind the wheel, pop in a playlist from my younger days when I had my ‘76 Stingray, and I just grin a stupid grin until it’s time to come back to reality.

I was 17 when I saw my first C4 at a dealer and was able to sit inside the car, now when ever I drive my 85 I'm back in that dealership, except now I have the keys....

Me too! Except I still have my old cassettes from the 80’s. I play them in my Bose and they still sound good!
Back in the day there was a Drive in Movie on Route 10 and 46 in northwest New Jersey. I'm pretty sure it was every Memorial Day weekend they would have a car show there. It was ushering in the summer season. Of course it's not there any more. Small town America keeps being absorbed by developers.

I was stationed down at Ft Benning back in the early 70's. Being a GI we were the social outcasts of the time, not accepted my most places or groups. Never got to those places but did find The Tiki (I think that what it was called). Best you could do on a GI's income.
We had a few places we hung out when I was a civilian but that was another time and another place. There's a small drive-in that still exists here that gearheads gather on Monday nights during the summer months. It is a blast to see what others are still driving.
ahh. the early 70s. I too was an outcast even tho I lived there.. captured me and off to NAm I went (71/72). I think your talking about Victory Drive, the main drag rwix Benning and Columbus. Lt Calley still lives there, married into a well to do family. Got into a few drag races on that road.
There's a place close to me called Jerry's Curb Service. It's in Bridgewater, PA. It's a 50's style burger drive inn restaurant. Car hops (waitress's) and no indoor seating. All the local motorheads go there to eat and view others cars. Open all year long. But in the summer it's hard to find a parking space. Brings back memories of driving my 66 Chevelle SS convertible to Eat-N-Park back in the late 70's.

Reason: typo
We used to cruise an old mall here in Columbia, Dutch Square Mall. I was lucky enough to take my Mom's 85 silver and gray corvette a few times cruising. Man I thought I was the king turd lol! Good times...

Victory Dr, that was one of the places I remember all too well. Funny you mention Lt Calley, Benning was the last duty station I had, though I started infantry I was AG doing the OCS school down there doing promotions and reassignments plus handled dropouts of many of the schools. When I had CQ duty, one of the places we had guards was near the BOQ Calley was in. Word I got to pass along to the kids on guard duty was you did not go closer than the sidewalk in front of that place, the on-site guards supposedly had orders to shoot first and ask questions later if anyone got too close (sign of the times). I may have had a 45 but that wasn't anything compared to a M16 and I valued my hide more than trying to get a look at him. I don't think he had had his trial yet when I was there but time and memory goes too fast.
Got a few other stories from around there, but they're not suitable for public admission.

Those were the days! We had a cruising route, just parade up and down the strip. Lots of mustangs in my tiny little town but I was the only one with a vette!!!!
My hometown had its main block downtown surrounded by one-way streets, all stop signs, all right turns. Lots of us would head down there and just drive around the block, or as we said, "Scoop the Loop!".
Sadly, they changed to all two way streets in the last decade. No roaring passes or facedowns any more.

I go back and cruise through sometimes, teenagers still following the same loop. Still hanging out in the same parking lots. Even see a few folks I used to know but most of us got out. Towns like that are a great place to grow up but don't offer much opportunity for prosperity or gainful employment. I used to love to pop the l98 in neutral and give the gas a tap when passing a crowd, the l98 had a nice smooth rolling rev, sounded so good......
