new leather skin on my 1986 steering wheel
Hello All:
I’m putting a new leather skin on my 1986 steering wheel. The original leather was cracked, rotten and nasty looking. Does any body know what the sticky layer is between the rubber over molded wheel and the leather skin is? I think it is a sprayed on layer to keep the leather from moving around. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Ed A

Interesting project. Where is the replacement leather skin sourced from? I have a wheel id like to so the same with.
As for glue, ive seen oldschool yellow contact cement used in upholstery and i have used 3m spray 90 as a permanent and pretty much instant spray adhesive bond.
Im not familiar with how the skin is positioned around the wheel as to whether or not using a quick/instant adhesive would be smart ir not.

Do you have a picture of the new skin? As mentioned before, this is sewn onto the steering wheel. Might need an upholsterer to do this.

The New Skin
It fits very snug on the outside of the wheel. Stitching is pretty straight forward however after I removed the tar like coating, I will be using E6000 to bond the skin to the wheel.

Well it’s finished! It took a lot longer than anticipated but well worth it. Having never worked with leather before, it was a bit of a learning experience.

Did the needle and thread come with the kit? What's the source?
I've looked at it several times and that's a good job.
