Default Is there a way to ID a manual C4 from the VIN

Like the title says, is there a way to ID a manual C4 from the VIN ? I know that for 1996, if the 8th digit is a "5", it is an LT4 car. If the digit is a "P", it is an LT1 car.

But what about the rest of the years ? I watch the salvage sites, but some of them purposely don't show the shifter up close.

No. The trans type is not shown in the VIN. The 1990-1995 C4 ZR1's were all manual trans cars but the engine code in the VIN will be a "J".

I agree with c4cruiser.

In addition if you are looking for a 6 speed. The ZR1 ZF6 is not interchangeable with the L98/LT1/LT4 cars. The ZR1 transmissions have a different length input shaft. The ZR1 flywheel is also different from L98/LT1/LT4 cars.

If you were really serious you could subscribe to CompNine and decode the VIN for option content. Serious auction watchers and salvage resellers use this as part of their evaluation of salvage.

thanks I will have to keep that in mind. never heard of that site. basically I am just looking for the one time I can grab a car that has a D44 in it for cheap. kind of like the one I missed for $200.00 but couldn't get to N.C. in time.

right now Zip discontinued the heavy duty D36 differential cover. they ran out of the blocks that were sold to them by Ikerds and the man that made them has passed away.

I was told that they are working on a redesign and that it will come out later. that would work just fine for my purposes if it does come to fruition as would a inexpensively acquired D44.
