Default '86 Window Question

Are the driver and passenger windows normally slow to roll up and down? Or is it time for new motors? Thanks

First gen C4's have a slow motor on the windows. I have 35k miles on mine and the window motors are definitely slow....Ive had several year C4's and to me, theyre all slo w.... but the early C4's are typically slower. I dont mind though...I even tried cleaning and lubing everything when I had the door panels off for window sweep replacement and there was really no difference in speeds afterwards.

Thanks for the info. Saves me the trouble of putting in new motors.

The 86's had the scissor type regulator on the drivers side and the nylon track (ala 84/85) on the pass side. Switching to an 87> pass scissors type is a great upgrade.

Process is simple and it takes a few hours start to finish. No drilling or mods needed. Of course the wires maybe reversed. 50/50 chance of that..

My 86 is a latter built car and it has ribbon lifts on both doors. They are slow.

My 87 had that silly white ribbon also, ditch those and upgrade, worth every penny!

I paste this because I used it to do my pass side on my 85. Works well.

Thats not the norm for Al headed 86's. Not surprised to hear that though.

I upgraded the side window regulator assemblies to the later style on my 85, wiring plugs straight onto the newer side window regulator motor.
Best upgrade for early C4's

My 86 was very slow also. The drivers side ribbon broke and I upgrade to the scissor type also. I didn't think the job was that easy. It took me sometime to get the window to line up with the targa and the weather stripping. At first, there was a gap and then it was going up too far. Also my hands are big and working on the inside of the door was hard for me. The good news is that the previous owner converted the passenger side over.

Just my experience.

Mine was too. I replaced both when the driver side broke. Were very slow.

I have since upgraded my 85, but years ago, I replaced a broken ribbon on my drivers side. while things were apart, I cleaned and lubed everything with lithium grease. up-down operation was within 1/2 second of my 96. that didn't last long - replacement aftermarket ribbons are pretty much junk and only last few years, thus the upgrade.

Had an early 86 and an 87 - both were slow. Have a 90 now and it is much faster than the 86E and 87 were.
