My ac seems to work, blows cold air but when it gets really hot here in Florida the AC is a joke

I thought I saw somewhere that the Factory AC never was very good ? or does mine need work ? or total replacement ?

Something is wrong.
In Houston Texas summertime heat, with the setting on recirculate and blower motor speed on 1 or 2, I get high 30 or very low 40 degree air out of the center ducts.

You might have problem I had my 1989 for 23 years, living in S Florida, without any issues in keeping the car cool.

Take the car to a reputable shop that works on A/C systems. You could have something as simple as low Freon. Your '89 uses R12 freon as the refrigerant. The system can be upgraded to R-134a.

It's possible that the sunlight in your area is causing heat buildup. The rear hatch glass can let the interior temps climb. Same with the clear top.

That could be expensive if you want to do it as recommended. Not sure if there is a correct orifice for the R134A. I bought one a while ago and it doesn't fit so I had to get a R12 one which probably isn't the right one for the job. You'd have to get the oil out so maybe change compressor or at least rinse it out? Not sure about that one. Also recommended to change all the O-rings. Also it isn't as good as R12 since the system was designed around it. Would not call it an upgrade.
