Default Weatherstripping

I removed the hatch weatherstripping and noticed what looked like an uncured goop under it. Is that from the factory? If so, should I just place the new weatherstripping over it or use solvent to remove and buy some weatherstripping adhesive?

I put mine right over it. I think it' sort of a moisture blocker type material.

Yeah someone mentioned that on Facebook but thought Id ask here since I would probably get a larger response. How long ago was that? And hows it seem to be holding up?

I cleaned that all up just so I wouldn't have to mess with it later and glued just the corners when I did mine. Haven't had any problems with it doing it that way. Not sure everyone will agree that is the right way or not, but worked for me.

That (goo I read) came from the factory that way. But, far as I know, no other weatherstripping on the car was installed with that stuff: good thing too, because it was a huge FAIL, in my opinion.

So, after the car was repainted (in 2014) I installed my new hatch seals using 3M weatherstripping adhesive on the entire lengths. (Yeah, it was a little tricky to do it that way - prolly why they uses the never-dries crap at the factory!?) And, for good measure, I wetted a rag with some of that silicone based tire shine and applied it to the hatch (and ALL of my) seals to preserve the rubber, yes, but mostly to prevent the glass from sticking (somehow) and dislodging the rubber seal(s). Bingo!

agreed! My personal choice, again IMHO, I do not use anything silicone based on my car. I use thin die electric grease or other. Silicone will wear on rubber after a long time and also play havoc if you ever need any paintwork on your car but 99% of the time I say it would be no problem.

Been a couple months. Haven't really been using the hatch a lot since then so can' comment on the durability. I will say, the new weatherstrip was TIGHT when I put the glass down.
