Default hyper sensitive steering

Going down the highway at 65- 75 mph in my 85 corvette the slightest bit of steering wheel movement makes the car really veer hard left or right. it's way to sensitive!! Makes it hard to drive. is this a common problem? what can be done?

I have a 85 Z51. The Z51 option is a close ratio steering option. Anyway, I have had mine for 7 years. When I first got it, I noticed the same problem as you. So far I have bought new tires, shocks, four way alignment and finally had a new rack and pinion. All this and the steering was still critical. So, assuming you don't have a mechanical problem, you will learn to deal with it. It just takes a lot of seat time.

Steering feel is important: I get that. Prolly the worst feeling experience I remember was back in the 70s while driving an older Chrysler. The steering had so little resistance feedback that it felt like being completely removed from the steering control all together! Felt weird! Is yours something like that??

My Z doesn't seem to want to wander, but my wife's Z does...a little bit.

Mine kinda used to, but since it was 4-wheel aligned to spec, it is (I think) perfect now. (I hold the wheel in my hands and just think about turning right or left - and the car goes there!) I'm hoping an alignment will fix the way hers feels as well.

So, to be clearer, are you having problems with the effort it takes to turn right or left, i.e. too light? Or, is it more of a wandering issue?

z51 IIRC was 2 turns lock to lock. Base was 2.5 lock to lock.

Some guys complained when the cars were new that z51 was too aggressive for the road.

Racers really don't like it at all.

It is cool for certain people though because it makes the car feel very responsive and if the suspension components are in good shape feel very nimble too; which for a sports car adds to the experience.
