Hooker Headers for 1984
I just purchased a set of Hooker headers part number 2151 HKR. Doesn't look like they will fit, I was told to get the shorties. I ordered them from Summit Racing. Does anyone have any experience with this set of headers and will they fit without removing, cutting or bending anything within the car or the headers themselves? Thanks

2151s will fit, many use the 2149 which comes coated with the emissions stuff, but it is the same header otherwise. The 16720 Y-pipe fits it, but you may want a rubber hammer or pry bar to make it all fit.
The 84 has the behemoth starter, so that will not be pleasant. I tell folks to change that to a 88-91 starter when you do the headers. The 88-91 starter only may need a shim or two and/or a cable extension. I did not have to do that though.

PS: One common thing I have read repeatedly (but cannot yet confirm) is that the DS alternator support does not fit the headers.
Mine is missing (and has been missing) and I have to fab one anyway, so it's not a big deal to me. But YMMV.
I have read the TPIS headers are the ones with the least fitment issues and they retain that bracket.

TPiS will not retain your accessory braces, I run TPiS. I don't think Hooker does either. So the rear alternator support piece and the same on the other side for the compressor will go away.
Not an issue with the alternator in my experience, but you do need it on the 88-91 cars' AC Compressor. The cheap potmetal they built the bracket out of will snap when the compressor cuts on and off. It was never an issue with the 86's compressor.

Recently I worked on my 1984, eliminated the emissions stuff, gutted the catalytic converter and have muffler eliminators and the car runs fantastic, did not have the need for headers, the stock manifolds seem to have been designed very well.
Did you notice a lot of sound difference with the cat gutted? Getting ready to do that to my 84

L98s respond to the tune of 15-20 hp from headers, 84 may not respond the same because of the xfire choking it, but the factory did not design those manifolds for flow.
Forgot to mention that I also installed the Renegade manifold, 85 fuel pump, adjusted the pressure to 12 pounds, it is running very well with those mods.
