My '84 has a black plastic/ rubber flap with a ground strap on it over the top of the distributor cap. It is kind of in the way. Is that a required piece or can I just take it off?
When I got my '84 that distributor cover was missing. Car ran fine with out it. I looked long and hard to find that cover (finally did) and now it's on my car. If you remove yours - be sure to hang on to it as they are hard to come by (one year only part).
I agree - it does tend to get in the way. But I do like that stock look, so I deal with it.
Hopefully others will chime in, but I don't think it's necessary to have it. Most likely there to protect the distributor from water and such.

It's actually an RFI shield but if you ain't liking it remove it. If it's complete with the foil lining and ground-strap they're offered frequently on eBay for $70+
