Default Walker Quiet flow Mufflers

Hey Guys
I am just curious to hear about experiences with the Walker quiet flow mufflers on and 85 or year close to it. It looks likes some of you have installed them, and I wanted to get some feedback on the low rpm drone, up to around 1500rpm. I understand that nothing seems to compare with Corsa, but it seems like some of you out there are using them. Thank you.

jack - after all I went through with the 86 corsa retrofit installation on my 85, I pulled it, installed it on my 90, and installed a full walker system back on the 85. the corsa's were great, but I needed to upgrade the 90's exhaust in order to sell the car. my 2-cents on walker -- great sounding - somewhere in-between stock and corsa. in reality, kind of easy on my old man ears, and absolutely, no drone. walker's, not quite as loud at idle, but a fairly healthy sound. the walker's mimic the corsa at WOT, again, not quite as loud. at steady-state cruise, i can barely hear the exhaust. BTW, i went with the walker quiet flow mufflers. still a big corsa fan, but may or may not return to corsa anytime soon. on the walker, i continued with the 86+ upgrade on my 85. no issues on fitment, except the muffler tips a a bit low for my liking - nothing i can't live with, and i am out of adjustment! cost, i pretty much got the complete walker system for less than $600 shipped from summit racing (pre-cat-less front y-pipe). exhaust sound is subjective, but I think of walker as "corsa-lite"

I replaced mufflers on my 85 with these. Doesn't show the correct tips in the picture

A different sound for sure. Miss the originals.
I don't think there is a bad drone

Thank you for the feedback on the Walkers. I just ordered them. Your opinions and time are greatly appreciated.
I know they can't compare to Corsa. But if there's no drone, then it's was worth trying before buying the Corsa. Thanks again

I had them on mine. They were quiet but no drone I could hear. The before is the walkers. They're listed as Corvette central OEM reproductions but they're the walkers.

cdm747....I'm possibly facing some exhaust system work on my '89. Could you give more specifics on your exhaust system from the front back, like who's X-pipe, etc.

I want a pretty quiet exhaust for not only conversation in the car, but also to not be obnoxious to those outside it either. It's probably like quick/cheap/good (pick any two) but would like to have something that might alsoenhance performance a bit.

I don't need a stainless system, or the price of it.

I'm probably asking for a lot but why not at least ask?

Thanks.

Lynn,

I brought my 88 to a local muffler shop and had them fabricate everything. I believe the only thing they had to outsource was the x pipe and the mufflers. Not sure exactly what size the pipes are but if I was to guess maybe 2 1/2". Hard to get good pictures since I don't have a lift. System is totally welded so no problem with leaks or clamps loosening.

lynn - allow me step in here. I've installed a complete walker system that was a 86-91 retrofit on my 85. the walker front Y-pipe is catless, and only utilizes the main cat. improvement in cat technology allows the elimination of the pre-cats, while still meeting emission standards. newer main cats flow much better than original OE equipment, so, although minimal, you get a slight performance benefit with no pre-cats and a better flowing main cat. the walker rear y-pipe is a stock replacement and with a pair of walker mufflers pretty much gives a stock replacement exhaust system. sound - just slightly louder than stock, but not in your face loud that will draw too much attention. IMO a good healthy sound for a street, daily driver with minimal interior noise. most, if not all of the hardware is aluminized steel. you will have a choice of two walker mufflers - quiet flows, or sound FX. difference is internal, and i'm guessing the quiet flows, flow a bit better. I went with the quiet flow direct fit mufflers on my 85. price wise, after shopping around, found everything at summit racing, and paid less that $600 and that included stainless band clamps (vs standard old school, u-bolt muffler clamps). summit has free shipping over $99. the walker system will pretty much be a stock replacement, slightly better performance, and only a tad louder than stock. I had no issues with fit, finish, and installation. BTW, I highly recommend these as replacements for OE exhaust manifold lock nuts - https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-BMW-Set...19.m1438.l2649

Thanks to both of you for "Exhausting" replies (pitiful pun, but intended).

Both of your replies give me more ideas of what I can and perhaps should do. I'm retired from metal fabrication and although it would be quite a pain to do it laying on a creeper under the car, I could probably piece an exhaust system together with mandrel bends and straight pipe. I'd just tack everything together under the car and then pull it out so it could be positioned better for welding (TIG). The photos and suggestions give me a better idea of what I might try to do, even if I take it to a muffler shop rather than doing it myself.

So, Joe C, what you referred to as the "pre-cats" are those in the right and left pipes coming off the engine? You'd eliminate those and leave the main cat that's in the single pipe after the two merge? I'd like to have an actual "X" pipe where the main cat is, having heard of the benefits of them, but being a street car I'd better be a good boy and leave at least the main cat.

Thanks for the input!

I thought I'd offer a follow up. The way I realized I was in for some exhaust work is that the cat and center section of my exhaust was dropped way down. I feared the worst and figured it was really in bad shape most of the way through. Much to my surprise the exhaust, with the exception of the mufflers, was in good condition, I merely had a hanger broken just ahead of the "Y" pipe going to the two mufflers. That was remedied quite simply with another hanger I happened to have on hand.

Since one muffler was toast, I ordered two Walker Quiet Flow mufflers and installed them today. No particular issues with getting the old ones off. I partially cut through the muffler inlet lengthwise so I could use a cold chisel to peel back a narrow section of the pipe from the "Y" pipes. Then it was just a matter of cleaning everything up, slipping the new mufflers on and clamping everything up.

I was very pleased with the sound of the Quiet Flow mufflers. Just a slight rumble out back, and certainly quieter inside the car driving at highway speed. I'm guessing the old mufflers were some sort of "turbo" muffler and the rumble was just a bit much for my taste. To each their own for sure, but my car will now be a much more pleasant ride for my wife and me.

Thanks to everyone who shared info. It would have been useful and food for thought if I had found more significant problems than a bad hanger and one bad muffler!

That’s great to hear. I just received a new rear Y pipe, so hopefully I get some time soon to get the Walkers on.. I made a mistake years ago by having the mufflers welded on, so then I couldn’t play around with different mufflers. Thanks again for the follow up.
