Default Clunking when slowing down

1989 stock. Auto trans. 53,000 miles

when i slow down, as the transmission down shifts to lower gear because of slower speed, I get very loud chunk in rear of car. It’s not transmission because this is a new rebuilt and the noise was there before having transmission rebuilt. Had corvette shop check u joint and drive axle shafts while car was in shop for another reason. They said they looked good. Just replaced dog bones on each side but did not help. Don’t notice it if I stop more quickly or accelerate. Any ideas?

I'd start off by putting the rear on jack stands, and with the trans in neutral, rotate one of the rear wheels one way and then quickly change direction and see if you can spot the source that way.

It sounds like a U-joint, but might be an issue with a worn spline or something else.

Don't rule out brake calipers OR spindles...Just sayin!

I will try that. Just replace rear gears and brakes. Noise was there before and after

I changed the fluid in my rear end and that stopped all my clunking

This is the second rear end. Clunking was there before replacing it with 3.07 gears Had 2.59 gears before

i think it has to be one of the following

sway bar
half shaft joints
or u joint

the shop said half shaft and u joints were ok, but ?

when my transmission was rebuilt about 200 miles ago, they supposedly checked u joint, but ?

How did you like the jump from 2,59 to 3.07?

Love the change. Don’t know if I would go any lower, maybe 3:20’s, but no further
