Default Transmission fluid change.

This may of been posted before, and if it has I'm sorry for asking again. And this may be a stupid question, again I'm sorry. I own an 84 C4 with the CFI engine. I need to change the trans pan gasket. For the life of me I can not find where to pour the new trans fluid. Can anyone tell me where it is under the hood?

Use a thin funnel and fill from the dipstick tube by the passenger firewall.

So there is no place to fill other than the dip stick? Also a little nervous to change the fluid. The car has 114k miles and I'm not sure if it's ever been changed before. Worried changing it will cause damage due to it's high miles. But the gasket on the pan has a slight leak so I need to drop the pain regardless

Have you considered taking it to a garage or buying a service manual?

I both the oil pan and trans pan are leaking. Original gaskets on both. The leaks are not bad. Just a few drops but I figured might as well just do it before it gets worse

It's the only place to fill the tranny. Just go for it. Change the filter too.

I certainly respect your desire to learn. Understand the $$$ argument also.

But be careful. If you mess the trans up it's about 1600 bucks.

A service manual is handy. You can review it before jumping into new projects. It covers a lot of little stuff you might not otherwise be aware of.

As far as high mileage fluid changes go - NO. New fluid (And Dex/Merc III is fine for your car) will not hurt it.

Transmission fluid is extremely detergent and what has happened in the past is transmissions with debris in them have had it washed loose where it finds it way into the controls (typically the governor) and sticks them, causing a no shift.

It's rare, but it can happen. If it does, they can be cleaned. It's an advanced project, though. You'd have to be very careful.

I would change it anyway because the idea of 100K, 35 year old, trans fluid makes me cringe. Then again, if it went south on me I own a transmission shop and you don't.

Best of luck. If you need any help just ask. These people know everything!

PS: The Engine Oil Pan is a much bigger project.. But it can be done in the car.

In fact it is much easier in the vette than it is in many other vehicles I've seen.

It's bigger.. It has seals at the front and rear to get right.

It's not hard, but it is a little fiddley.

Easier on the vette than any other RWD car I can think of, though.

I bought a single silicone gasket for it, with all new hardware. Hardest part is gonna remember which bolt goes where and the torque spec

I'd think it important to mention if this car is an A4 (Auto) or maybe a 4+3 manual. The the 4+3 manual has a pan gasket also. It seems that everyone has assumed A4 and they're quite likely correct BUT .................

I can tell you I helped change a friends fluid in the transmissions and looking at the fluid it was so dirty, told him leave it alone, BUT we changed it anyway, and when we looked at the pan, it was full of metal and, another stuff.
We put it back together serviced it, back it off the lift, and that was last time it was into reverse, we had to rebuilt the transmission.

So be careful!

Well just judging by the dipstick. It looks pretty clean but I know that's not a good indication
