Historical PLATE, Good or Bad opinions..
Hello All--was considering getting a historical pate on 84C4, but read that you are ONLY legally drive to show's an such, I'm not into show"s at all, don't know if ya get hassled or ticketed for driving on them, I'll only drive about 2K for summer,
**wondered if theres any good or bad reason's to help make decision (I like the $75.) fee, thanks for any advise...

It depends on which state you reside. Some allow for occasional driving and taking for maintenance and repairs. Google your state to check out rules. Here in Jersey the leos don't hassle until you do something stupid.

I had 1971 plates on my 1971 Monte Carlo, I live in a rural area and was hassled by the cops for driving it to work so I put regular plates on it....my insurance went from 160/6 months to 450/6 months because of the catastrophic claims in Michigan (which has the highest rates in the country)

I've got "Collector" plates on my '84 which is the term used in MN for 20+ year old vehicles. Our restrictions published are similar to what the OP has described but unless you are using it as a dd your chances of being hassled are slim. I've driven mine to work following a trip to the dealer for an oil change, etc.
We're a '2-plate state' but the Collector plate vehicles require only one for the rear. I have an NCRS plate on the front and to a non-enthusiast LEO my car could look like one that doesn't qualify for the 'Collector' status and may be subject to scrutiny.
Our plates are a one time purchase-no annual registration fee at all. That somewhat offsets what I pay for renewals on the newer ones.

here in PA it goes by the honer system. unless there is a cop sitting everyday watching you drive past and doing something to get his attention and or getting your insurance company checks up on you. who is going to turn you in.

I put PA antique tags on my 91 last year. Here are the restrictions in PA:
So basically, here in PA, the car can't be your primary vehicle. The perks here are a one time registration fee and exempt from state inspection. My insurance rates went down drastically also.
USE OF ANTIQUE, CLASSIC AND VINTAGE REGISTRATION PLATES The use of antique, classic and vintage registration plates is governed by Section 1340 of the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code, which states: “It is unlawful for any person to operate a motorcycle or vehicle with antique, classic or vintage registration plates for general daily transportation. Permitted use shall be limited to participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades, occasional transportation and similar uses.” Occasional transportation and similar uses are defined as no more than one day a week.

I'm in Canada, so different rules. Lucky to be able to drive the antiques even 6 months out of the year for a lot of us. My '72 corvette is $176 a year with regular plates.

I have an Antique plate on my '89 vert. Supposed to only be driven in parades, club meetings, shows and such. Not for general transportation. I don't drive it everyday but a few times on the weekends . I don't think the police really care about the plate. If stopped and asked i'm on the way to or from a meeting. Usually true since I've been to a members place. Antique plates mean no renewals and property taxes. I put them on All my eligible cars and motorcycles.

Here in Maine you are supposed to use the vehicle for parades, shows, clubmeetings ''primarily'',so driving occasionally for pleasure is fine.
''Primarily'',being the key word.

I was harassed for 45 minutes by a Michigan State trooper because he said my plate wasn't in the system, no it's not, the historical plates are not in the normal system, there is a phone number cops are suppose to call to check them, you get a letter from the state of Michigan when you get the plates with the number, I finally told the trooper to go back to school and learn how to do his job, told him to give me a ticket or go away, and asked him if he had nothing better to do than harass a middle aged man in a classic car with a clean driving record, he called his Sargent then told me to have a nice day LOL!

I’ve had PA Antique plates (historic) on my cars for years. Never been hassled. The biggest thing I get from people is “ can you drive them at night?” My usual reply is “sure, they’ve got legal lighting”. My insurance company is unaware of the plates. I drive them year-round, they never go into hibernation. 6 cars bundled with a homeowners policy is reasonable.
