Le Mans Master
I have seen both smoked and colored panels painted. Ideally molding is removed but it could be masked off. Just need to prep and paint. I have heard of buffing smoked panel similar to headlamps with limited success.

Mine was painted white by the original owner but it's not a very good job. Not near as glossy and some chipping around the trim. I've filled the little chips and have rubbed it out some but I'm afraid to go too far. I'd love to wet sand it with some super fine stuff to flatten it before buffing, but if I broke through, then I'd have a real project on my hands. If you have it done, make sure it's done right. I think mine was a home job.

I had mine painted red on top, but black on the bottom to keep the light out....been a few years now, no issues...
also used a red carbon fiber for awhile....worked great.....painted the roof when the car was repainted
