I just purchased a 88 coupe. It has 23k miles and the original tires P275/40 17. I think with 17's it came with an optional suspension for that year. Can anyone recommend a good replacement tire? I would like something a little softer for the better ride. Also, what would have been the difference in regards to the suspension ?

Congrats on getting your '88 Vette, welcome to the Forum and "save the wave".
In .88 those 17x9.5 wheels came with the RPO Z52, Sport Handling Package :
-B4P: radiator booster fan
-FG3: Delco-Bilstein shocks
-KC4: Engine Oil Cooler
-17x9.5 wheels
-fast steering
If you have a manual tranny you might have the RPO Z51. Check under the console lid to verify codes.
My first 35th Anni. came with GY Eagle all-weathers, which performed well for over 50k miles on track/highway in all weather so I've been running the equivalent tires for close to 20 yrs.
I am in the same boat you are. I would really like something smother and more quiet than the Nitto's that are currently on the car. I have been looking for touring tires, but havent seen much, Most seem to be some variation of a UHP,
When I purchased my C4 a couple weeks ago the first thing I did was replace the worn out tires. Got General G-Max RS. http://generaltire.com/tires/performance/g-max-rs So far I'm very happy with them. Very good road feel.

I put a set of Kuhmo's on my 89 coupe. Got a great deal from Discount tire direct. Also got a $125 rebate. I replaced a set of Goodyears that looked brand new but were going on 8 years old according to the date code. I love these Kuhmo's! Much better ride than the Goodyears and very quite. Handling is improved too.

That is a good price on the Kumho's.
SOmeone also mentioned the Cooper Zeon. I had a set of those on my G35 and loved them
I like the Coopers and have them on my E90 BMW 328i xdrive. That car came with Bridgestone Run Flat tires and I couldn't wait to take them off.
I think for the Corvette application, they are about $33 more per tire compared to the Kuhmo's
