Default What is the differences????

I have an '87 vette vert.
While looking for some rims and suspension parts it seems that rims are listed from 88-95, why?
Suspension parts are the same 84-87. and it continues...……

What makes the '87 different?
What are the changes ?

If I missed something in he search - I apolagize

The C4 generation is divided into two halves regarding suspension design: 1984-87 and 1988-1996. The suspension parts are not the same. For the 88 model year, Chevy changed quite a bit about the front suspension designs and some aspects of the rear suspension as well. A big goal of the changes was to reduce scrub radius, and that means that the 88-96 C4s require wheels with 18mm more offset. For example, 16x9.5 wheels on the early cars came with 38mm offset whereas the 17x9.5 wheels on the later cars had 56mm offset. If you try to run the early wheels on later cars, they'll stick out toward (or past) the edges of the fenders. If you try to run the later wheels on early cars, they'll sit too far inward and probably contact suspension or fender liner parts. But if you want to run the later wheels, you could use 18mm (or 3/4") spacers and they would fit fine that way. You'd need longer wheel studs to use the spacers.

The 84-87 came with 16" rims and the offset was 36-38mm
When they changed to 17" rims they went to 56mm offset
You could probably run the later rims but you would need to use wheel spacers

Car will look odd with out proper offset or spacer. Tires tuck in under wheel openings. Fronts will rub turning. The 84-87 front suspension is the major difference. The 86-87 some consider to be the best racers.

Thank you for the info.

The problem I want to avoid is the same I am running into with my GTA.
50 series 16" tires are not as abundant as they used to be.

With the GTA, 245/50-16, I have 4 quality choices
The vette, 255/50-16, I have about 6 quality choices.

With 17" rims - there are about 14 or more choices.

I have had cars in the past where, although a good car, parts were almost impossible to find.
Tires too

Yes, there are plenty of choice in 275/40r17 sizes (245/45r17 too, in case you end up getting a staggered wheel set with 17x8.5 wheels up front). If I were you, I'd just use 3/4" spacers and buy a set of 88-96 wheels in the style you like. Anything else is going to be a lot more expensive and very hard to sell later if you want to replace them.

PS - Don't forget the longer ARP wheel studs, though!
