I just talked to a guy that have 2 86 ZR-1 prototype!!!! He is located in england !! I think those are pricles  he told me that they are the only two in the world  here are some pics : note the 8k rpm digital cluster , the motor has no corvette and 4cam 32valve writen on it and note the narow body !!!
They made no prototypes in 86. There were Lotus component test cars that had LT-5s in them for testing. It is hard to tell from the picture which engine is shown. An 86 would be a Phase 1 motor unless replaced later in the testing cycle. It could be a Lotus test car as I know of one other that is here in the states but it was one of the graveyard cars that has been reassembled. I would be quite interested in:
VIN of car
engine #
copy of the build sheet.
Is this a crushed car that was put back togeather or a test car that was hidden until now. Who owns the car? And who did he know? I know the prototype scene pretty well and would sure like to document what the cars really were/are. The build sheets are on file with the NCM and the VIN can be used to get a copy which can be used to help document his claim.

Re: 86 ZR-1 prototype !! (stillthere)
I forget where it was but I read that GM shipped a certain amount of them (dont remember how many) minus engines to Britain for Lotus to use during design of the LT5 engine. Maybe these are 2 of them? If so ther ARE incredibly rare and Im drooling just thinking about it. Although like most prototype cars they will have some real safety or engineering issues to a greater or lesser degree. You probably couldnt even license them I would guess. :blueangel:
On Keith's website there is that these cars was found in a junkyard all wrecked up !! and he and his team collected all the cars and they are restouring them and rebuilding them to original condition !! there you can see pictures of one of the cars modified by lotus , doing the restoration on it and you can also find the pics when it was ready !!! these cars was orderd that when all the testing is ready from lotus they have to be crushed :mad but luckly they are in good hands now
Ed from the old "Ed's Corvette Shanty" had a yellow 86 prototype with that cluster, but last I knew he was in the US still.
:yesnod: Brian is right. I have seen this car in person. Awesome, just plain cool as hell. He rebuilt it from a demolished wreck after he brought it over from England. He was just having trouble getting it to run because the VATS system was confused seeing as it took a 90 ZR-1 computer to run the motor, etc, but still had an 86 computer on board as well I think for the dash, etc. Technicalities. ;)
Yes there were 1986 prototype ZR1's. They were sent to Lotus with out engines to have the phase one engine installed. The car in the picture looks like Ed's car which was the only one of the crushed cars to be put back together. Maybe he sold it to someone in England.
