Happy New Year to all. I have a 1996 C 4 standard Corvette and the carpeting that is just below the rear hatch window has pulled away. I have removed the plastic surround and am wondering what glue could and should be used to re-secure the carpeting. Could someone help me. I tried velcro but that did not work and I know both the surfaces are porous. Thanks for the help. Mike in Alabama
Mike,
The vertical section of carpet below the hatch latch (covers the rear of the cargo area) is not glued in place.
With the trim removed you will find hooks that hold it up. Over time the holes tear out.
Mine did that. So I taped a couple of nylon washers in place with gorilla tape and re-hung the carpet. Once the trim is back on it doesn't show.

Thanks so much for the information. I think that with the information you gave me that someone before me did glue the carpeting to the rear hatch. I think the hooks are long gone. There are traces of glue still visible so I will scrape that off and just see what I can do. Thank you for the help. Without you I would not have known that the original installation included hooks but it makes sense.
My 92 didnt use hooks. I had some studs sticking up and there were some washer looking retainers that slid onto the posts to gold them in place. My carpet is torn at that location, and no amount of duct tape, washers, or other mix of fixes solved it.
My new plan is to replace the whole thing with a trim to fit cargo mat I bought at Sam's club. Should be a more useful surface too.

If your going to use glue, I'd suggest stopping by the Colonial Shop on Ann St (just off Atlanta Hwy). It's actually an auto upholstery supply shop. I stopped by for replacement headliner material and had a really interesting discussion about what glues will hold up, particularly in central Alabama. They have high temp glue that doesn't fail when the car sits in the summer heat.

I think your description of studs is more accurate than hooks. In fact if I remember correctly they used push on retainers. Mine only had a 1/4 inch tear, probably from someone trying to pull it off.
If you do not want to use glue and there are no hooks
VELCRO
use a needle and some same colored thread and throw a few stitches on the back side of the carpet
peel and stick the other side to the car
