If the offset of the new wheels is significantly greater, may consider putting wheel adapters in place.
Just tweaking your post to add clarity. This is correct, and it's good because most later cars (including 88-96 C4s) have more offset. You can use those wheels with spacers.

9.5"x18" 40 backspace rims with 255x40zr18 tires. Fit just like the original tires and rims, handles well and rides very good. Get the right backspace and they fit just fine. This is a 86 convertible that had 9.5"x16" 38 backspace rims with 245x50zr16 tires on it when I purchased it. Has the same diameter as the oem tires so even the speedometer is unaffected.
