Default 1990 C4's... Educate me..

Looking at possibly picking up a 90 C4 M6 to play with... I am a C5Z,C6Z owner so not really familiar w the C4 platform. This one is Red/black, VATS bypass, steering column is a little wobbly, new clutch, trans, diff… Interior, exterior is in great cond given the year. Thanks in advance.

The injectors can be problematic if they are original. Push in the 12 o'clock position on the steering wheel. Check it for play, very common on all C4s. I don't know much about 90 C4s. I know LT1's. Best of luck. Just look at the car as you would any other vette.

The steering wheel wobble happens over time as people use the steering wheel as a handle to exit the car. There are four bolts in the steering column that work loose. They need to be removed one at a time and a small amount of red loctite placed on the first couple of threads and then reinstalled and re-torqued. This is common.

The L98 is bulletproof if maintained properly. People bypass the VATS system any time they suspect it causing an issue. The VATS system is also not as problematic as people make it out to be, With that said, the usual things to watch out for are leaking valve cover gaskets, rear main seal, and water pump. Those are the usual suspects. The rest of the car will be rock solid reliable if it has been maintained properly.

If your looking for a list of possible time bombs then there are plenty of things that you can nit pick (and plenty of people will). The entire worlds perception of every car model that spans many years is the newest one is the "best" and every preceding one is "garbage". Judge the car for what it is in front of you at the moment.

With that out of the way a 90/91 specifically has the last iteration of the L98 and it has a MAP sensor (Which I prefer) instead of a MAF. It's the last of the "square" C4's with the first of the new interior. It has a 2 year (90, 91) only interior in regard to the dash wrap around, the grey dash/console plastic and orange wording. It has one year only wheels which are similar to the 88/89 but no center cap. Over all it's a nice combo of the first and the last C4.

Thank you men for your time and candor. I have owned a couple of IROC's (87-89) they were great cars and both had the L98. My first Corvette was a 93 Quasar Blue A4 w the 273's... It was a fun car during that time. I am turning 54 next month. I own FAST corvettes already. The 90 would be a project cruiser. Once again thank you for your input. an older gentleman has owned this car for the past 18 yrs... He also owns a C3.. this one has a new clutch and trans, he would include the OEM trans with the deal. It is supposed to be in the 70's here in Dallas this Friday. I think I may go check it out. If I do i'll surely follow up. thanks again.

get ready for a disappointment if you compare to what you have.

I disagree. I have a 2012 GS and my 92 is way more fun to drive. Obviously not as fast, but way more fun.

^ I have heard what FAUEE has said many times!!

i dont' own a newer car but i have heard this sentiment repeatedly.

The 85 is a riot. No cacoons, with all the handling, and plenty of torque.

90= right air bag sensor contact on frame, radio/cassette issues, steering wheel can be filled or buy new bigger pin in column, injectors, typical c4 issues. Dash issues, tach issues.

Well, considering your post says you have a C5 and C6 Z, I'd think a C4 Z would make a "logical" trio set of ZRs, no? Just a thought!

Brother... a C4ZR1 would be an excellent addition.. That would truly be the ultimate collection! However, I don't have $20K to invest at the moment.

As stated... The C4 would be a gentleman's cruiser.. Thanks again for the feedback.
