Default Steering Column

I am presently using an external switch to start my project car. When I turn the key the car comes on but no starter noise. The key does not come back from the start position. I am trying to decide to buy a used column or repair this one. Could the ignition switch prevent the key from returning or is something bigger going on.

thank you

The ignition switch contains the spring that returns the key to the run position, from the crank position.

To clarify: The ignition switch is a separate module that is located near the bottom of the steering column, under the dash, and is actuated by a rod from the ignition key linkage. There is an "interlock" mechanism at the ignition key linkage (at the top of the column) that prevents the key from returning to the LOCK position, unless the trans is in the PARK position that could be causing your problem.
