Howdy Folks!
My Black Z is getting her last buffing before hibernation.
Does anyone have a "simple" way of removing the hood emblem so I can buff under it.
I managed the two nuts underneath but the emblem is stuck with a PFM double side tape. It is so strong I wonder why they bothered with the nuts.
I will forget the whole idea and go back to the old way before I damage my paint. Any secrets to this simple (?) task?
Thanks!! BC :nopity

Re: Emblem removal... (BlkGrlf)
Now thats interesting....I just replaced my hood emblem last weekend. It had 2 bolts on the backside and when I took them off it lifted right out. But...the new one not only didnt use nuts at all, just sticky tape on the backside but it was plastic and the original one is metal! And yes, Im sure I got the right year. Very weird as it came in a GM parts box too. :blueangel:
Ive heard that a hair dryer will heat up the tape enuff that it pulls off easily.
You may be able to use a strong piece of fishing line. This is how I used to do it. Use some WD-40 to soften the adhesive, and slowly work the fishing line between the car and emblem in a side to side motion while pulling toward you.

Man, I thought I was ****! Wax around it and clean up with a soft tooth brush. Much less hassel and if you're mad at the wife use her's and put it back she'll never know the difference! (Shush, don't tell!) :D
When I replaced mine recently, I tried everything (except fishing line, didn't think about enough I guess) and nothing seemed to work. I ended up prying them off and they broke into several pieces. I already had replacements ready so it wasn't so bad.
When I installed the new ones they had double sided tape and lock nuts...
They will break, so be careful and try the fishing line trick! :D
Thanks!
After trying the fishing line I got two new plastic putty knives....carefully slid one under each side of the emblem and waited.
As bad as the tape is....it will let go but very slowly.
It came off in one piece with no warps or anything. The paint was not stressed and the end result was factory fresh. The buildup of crap and wax under the edges was more than I thought.
Putting it back was much easier. I cleaned off the tape and painted a coat of teflon on the back to act as a cushion. No more tape...just the nuts.
The buzz-kill was after spending two days and all my Wife's better bath towels for removing the best Zaino has to offer, I turned on a newly installed florescent light in my garage...over my better than new ZR1. (I thought)
For anyone with a black or dark colored Vette....don't do this! You will not like what you could not see before under incandescant lighting. If you want it **** and perfect....don't use the tube light!
Thanks again!! BC
:mad :cry
Romoving the emblems just to clean under them is not worth the trouble or the risk of damage... But if you're removing the old, faded emblems to install new one, the key is to be patient...
After liberally soaking with WD40 and Goo Gone and heating with a hair dryer and several patient hours of using a combination of fishing line and dental floss... my permanently baked on emblems finally came off without damaging the original emblems or the paint underneath... But there was a point during all of this where I was convinced they were not going to come off...
