HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery.
Got her all washed and cleaned up yesterday for today, and of course when I went to start it, the battery is dead (I'm assuming). I bought a new one today, and I will attempt to replace it tomorrow night. I haven't done this in 20 years. Which cables come off first, and then in what order do they get re-attached? Also, is there anything vette specific I should know about.?

assuming it is a C-4 remove the neg cable first then the pos cable then take a open end wrench at the bottom of the panel by the battery and loosen the two bolts no need to take them off as the panel is notched then remove the bolt at the top of the panel loosen the battery hold down and remove. Have fun!
Re: HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery. (ladyinblack)
It's simple. You'll need a Torx-bit to remove the side panel. In the wheel well there are three or four screws along the outer edge that you remove. After that the side panel comes right off. Now, remove the negative terminal first. It should be removable with a socket wrench. Negative is black. Next, remove the positive. Rip the battery out and put the new one back in. Attach positive first, then negative. Replace side panel and make sure the side panel is on straight because otherwise your 'vette will look kind of funky. Best way to line it up is to finger tighten all of the Torx screws in the wheel well, just tight enough to be able to move the side panel where you want to and it will stay in place. As soon as it's adjusted tighten the screws back down and you're done. Make sure your 'vette starts.
Re: HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery. (GDP)
Thanks folks. I forgot to mention that it is a 91. What about the ground wire, or don't they have them anymore? Like I said, its been a long time since I've done this.
Re: HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery. (ladyinblack)
no ground wire... if there is one, its built into the negetive.
also, the panel won't just come off... its screwed from the bottom... and it can be a pain... it is easier to just pull it down, out of the way. it will flex more than enough.
Re: HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery. (ladyinblack)
Before taking the panel off, I put pieces of painters tape across the gaps. I then sliced the tape with a razor blade. When I went to put the panel back on, I had the lined up the pieces of tape.
Re: HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery. (ladyinblack)
As far as the side panel goes there are 3 torx screws in the wheel well and two 10mm screws at the door end, the top one will have to come out the lower one is slotted, some times it is easier to take out the two small torx screws at the bottom of the wheel well also (these are for the rocker panel) this will give you some room to get the lower 10mm screw lose without scratching the paint.
Re: HELP!! Need precise instructions for replacing battery. (We Gone)
BTW. This is good practice for when the windshield washer pump goes out and the PS side panel needs to come out. I'm getting pretty good at it. One week the battery, the next week it's the pump. :smash:
other comments about alignment, and about the bottom screw being slotted are "right on".
The only comment I can add is to be careful not to OVERTIGHTEN the screws when reinstalling.
A previous owner, or dealer, overtightned one og the 3 screws in the fenderwell on my car, and broke the side panel at that point.
It doesnt show, but annoys the &^% out of me :D
