What is the minimum octane rating that should be used for our vettes? I've been putting in 93 and 94.....and I wonder if its overkill or not. I'm guessing 87 might be too low....so is it 89 thats recommended? Or must it be higher?
:chevy
Mine runs well on 91, pings (very slightly under hard acceleration) on 89. It's got 150K miles so there may be some built up deposits in the combustion chambers.
Most automakers say to run the lowest octane that will not ping...... unfortunately I have to run 93. I have gottne stuck for money a few times and ran lesser and it keeps my foot out of it. ( I have my knock sensor unhooked) :seeya
you are using the right stuff. the cheaper stuff will gum up the motor over time. the cleaner the burn the better off you are. the money you save on cheap gas you will spend on tune ups and repairs. only the best for my beast.

There is a difference between cheap gas and low octane gas. Try not get confused on that. A quality 87 octane can keep your motor cleaner than a cheap 93. Octane rating has nothing to do with how "clean" it burns, that will only be determined by the additive packages of different manufacturers.
I never read the octane rating in the owners manual. But if you have modded your motor and increased compression, or it's running forced induction, then you need to run the higher octane.
All octane does is prevent detonation. So with higher compresion motors, you need a higher octane. There is no HP in octane.
If your car can run on 89, and I believe it can in stock format, then it wont hurt anything. Nathen pointed out that there is a difference between cheap fuel, and low octane. This is VERY true. Budget stations use a higher particulate content gas which then forms all the deposits in the morot, and fowls things up. Personally i use Chevron, because they are a high quality fuel, and that quality is consistant.
Running higher octane than you need will gain you nothing but less money.
Hope this helps.
