I am in the process of installing a new distributor and have the following question
The number one cylinder is at top dead center on the compression stroke. When I install the distributor, Does it matter where the rotor points as long as it matches up to the number 1 terminal on the distributor cap.
Theoretically, the answer is no, it doesn't matter. The distributor can be wired to the correct spark plug in any position of the distributor. But to be practical, the engine is designed for the best and shortest plug wire routing, if the rotor points toward the #1 spark plug when the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke. In that position, you'll find that there are only two plug wires that will need to cross over to the other side of the engine. So three of the wires from the top of the distributor stay on that same side of the engine!
Firing Order:
1 . . . left
8 . . . right
4 . . . right
3 . . . left
6 . . . right
5 . . . left
7 . . . left
2 . . . right
1 . . . left
