My 88 dash is cracked - go figure. Its one of the only interior pieces i wanted to re-use. I took alot of the plastic interior pieces and covered them with black vinyl, which looks great, but the dash presents its own problems.
Anyways, i see these companies (corvette central, etc) sells a dash pad "that slides over the exiting dash in minutes" for $100 or so........Are they worth it? Or is it a dollar store band-aid?
I was looking at an 88 35th Edition that had a cracked dashboard. I posted here a few weeks back as to what to order. Everyone was quite clear NOT to get the pad because it lays on top of the existing dash. Now if you are NOT going to show the car - it might not matter. But if you want it to look the best - you have to do a dash replacement, which is substantially more expensive.
I actually didn't buy that 35th Edition because of the cracked dash - it was that much of a turn-off for me... Hope yours gets fixed the way you want it.
I installed a dash cap on my 86 about five years ago . First I filled the cracks in my dash with plastic bumper repair filler and sanded it flat. Only an expert would know it is not OEM. I am pleased with it.
Good 2 know, guys. My Z is garage kept, so that delays the inevitable, I guess.
Visiting family in AZ, & FL too I noticed a lot of the cars had dash pads. "Welcome to the far south" I recon!
Once the OEM dash cracks, it's too late to protect it, far as NCRS points go. But, as a preventative measure, the Lloyd's stuff look attractive. (I have a set of Lloyd's floor and back deck mats. They're beautiful!)
My '90 has a very nice dash pad with logos embedded in it. I actually don't even know if the dash is cracked, but whether it is or isn't, I like the look. I think it works well in the car. Could be aligned a little better on the passenger side. I'll get around to that.
OP, I didn't see where you are, but for what it's worth, if you're in a hot, sunny climate, I would definitely recommend using a dash cover. I live in Las Vegas, and the sun here is absolutely brutal to the dash on all cars. Regardless what you think of build quality, etc. no dash can withstand something like that. If you're in a more temperate climate, then you've got some options, I suppose.
I think the dash pad looks fine. Not spectacular, but fine.
