Default Check engine light !

Another problem I am having is since I removed the pre cat Y pipe and the converter and replaced them with a larger diameter Y pipe and a straight pipe for the converter my check engine light comes on when I step on it over 65 MPH. The smog pipe is still connected to the engine but is no longer connected to the converter and is just strapped down under the car. I was told that the light comes on because there isn't enough back pressure which triggers the computer to turn the check engine light on. I haven't been able to get it to a shop and scan read it because it has OBD1 and clears all error codes when it's shut off. Can I remove the smog pip that runs from the manifold to the converter and cap it off with a plate ? I remember years ago someone made a plate for this application if so where can I get one ?

Thanks
Jim

Jim, do not waste your money with mechanics until you have pulled the code yourself: BTW... exhaust codes are not caused by "lack of backpressure" but by O2 reading variances.
