Need to replace original mufflers on stock 1986, any recommendations?
stock replacements - walker quiet flow ss. installed on my 85 - just a tad bit louder than stock, but not in your face loud. good healthy sound without drone. IMO, best bang for the buck.
I found some new OEM factory mufflers at a local shop, with the rectangle tips. Installed for $300. Maybe I just got lucky. If you are interested in stock replacements, you might find some if you look around.

Got a MAX dollar amount you can spend? That dictates your choices. In my case, I prefer SS since I am afraid of the system being a pile of rust with some metal since I drive it sometimes in winter.
I ran Borla's on my Corvette, loved them with lifetime warranty.
True. I have that setup with the Borla Stingers but the tips were round and the mufflers were bullet shaped not oval. With the TPIS LT headers and hollowed out cat, they were intolerable. Switch to a Random Technologies and now a Magnaflow cat to make it somewhat tolerable for the shorter drives. If I had to do it again, I'd buy try Corsa.

I put the Corsa's on my 1992. They sound nice, better than stock, for sure. Must be 10 years back now I got them, through the Forum on a special, I believe.
If you are wanting to stay stock, the Walkers are a good deal.
If you're not concerned about stock and looking for a better sound on a small budget, the eliminators are hard to beat. Quick hint though, in some cases, it is cheaper to buy the tips and have the muffler shop bend their own pipe than to buy the eliminators.
People that live in a state that require them to be there. Its part of emission testing in Utah (at least in a few counties) for the techs to visually confirm that the mufflers are still there. If they are not its an automatic fail regardless of the actual test results.

I live in California, the leader in smog laws in this country. Neither of my cars have mufflers. One of them has long tubes with no cats. There is a way around everything lol.

Sucks for me. My Borla system is in too good a shape to be dumped and I'd have to have local pick up to sell it unless I find a way to ship it. Kinda why I put up with the exhaust noise. If I had to do it again, I would get an SS system so it stands Salt better, have the best flow possible within what is needed and as quiet as possible. Borla was all that and easy to install other than the noise. Basically I would want a Borla with no sound if it was reasonably priced
