Most use the staggered set up that you describe. Some options use 17" x 9.5" with 275/40/17 tires on all four wheels. Your tire decal in the driver's door opening will show you either the staggered sizes or the square sizes. That will tell you what your car originally came with.
You also have the option of going from the staggered to the square setup. I prefer all four 17" x 9.5".
If you are getting a stock replacement make sure the "vanes" are pointing the correct direction. The left and right side wheels are different.
Make sure you get the right offset on the wheels if not stock wheels.
17"x 8.5"- 56mm
17"x 9.5"- 56mm
Assuming you have oem rims, isn't the wheel size cast on the inside of the rim? Also aren't they directional on your car, if so then insure you get the correct one.
