Default cannot attach new transmission filter fully, need help

hi, i am in the middle of a transmission fluid change of my 1985 corvette with a 700r4. i got the transmission filter out properly, but the orange gasket/seal remained in there, so i ignorantly took a screwdriver and took it out that way. got a new filter and all, and had all but some paper thin shavings of the old seal left. went to put it in, would not go in all the way at all. so i pulled the filter out and the gasket did not come out along with it, so once again i had to use the screwdriver. anyway, i was wondering that brass/aluminum ring sort thing, is that supposed to be removed also? i doubt it but i can’t seem to figure out why the new filter now ruined won’t come out. i ordered a new one and would like advice before i screw that one up too. thanks

Hello, I made that same filter change on my 86 with the same 700R4 tranny, the old filter came out easy along with that orange ring seal but had to force the new one in with a bottle jack, I placed a small wooden board on the bottom of the new filter to keep from damaging it while jacking. Thats about all I have to offer.

okay, thanks for the response. thinking of using a socket, extension and rubber mallet and nudging it up until it gets to the appropriate height, then attaching the filter to the seal when done, or do something like you did with the wood and jack

i’m sorry for sounding like a total idiot for not completely understanding fully but essentially prying the metal ring so it can lose “grip” of the remaining seal, right? thanks

again sorry for not fully understanding it, but i want that metal ‘ring’ piece to fall out right, or just the little bit of the old orange seal stuck in the gap? thanks

just want to add, use only GM/delco service replacement filter kits. when I tried to use aftermarket, I always run into problems. nothing like the real McCoy -

hadn’t really thought of that. makes sense why they’re so cheap compared to oem ones then.

you got it - the last aftermarket I tried was a made in china Purolator. fought that damn thing for hours - never could figure out WTF was going on. went back to the zero problem delco - 10 minutes, job done. lesson learned. probably used a dozen delco's over the years without issues. you pay a little more, but a transmission is no place to save a buck.

well i had ordered a car quest filter so i guess i’ll give it a chance anyway since i have it. anyway since you have done these changes often it sounds like, should i try my best to remove the rest of the orange seal in between the metallic ring and the cylinder it sits in? thanks

The metal ring needs to come out. That's what ihatebarkingdogs (I hate them too, dog owners) is trying to tell you to collapse.

okay thanks for clarifying that for me. just wasn’t sure because the new filters didn’t come with the ring, but i guess i’ll try to remove that ring entirely and try to put the new filter in.

The new filter should have come with a rubber o-ring that is about 3/8" to 1cm tall, and the same OD/ID as that metal ring + the orange goo around it. You replace that ring, with the new o-ring that should have come w/the filter.

See the orange o-ring in the pic here?

i had pulled the original orange seal out, but not in the way to take that metal ring with it. but it makes sense to me now if i have to pull that metal ring if the new filters’ one is the same diameter as that original metal one.

side note -- the service replacement filter, GM /delco part number 8657926 is for the 84-93 700r4 transmission. using genuine GM takes all the guess work out of it -

thanks for everyone’s help, apparently there were 2 old orange seals in the bore, so i removed them both and put the filter on and it went in.
