I am a brand new member and this is my first post, so please feel free to correct me on anything or direct my to a past post that answers my question. I am also by no means a mechanic, I have been learning as I go, and please excuse and correct any wrong terminology or if I am overlooking something more simple. I also apologize if this post is a little long. I have a stock 1984 corvette. I got it at a steal, and mechanically it was in pretty good shape, and I wanted something I could tinker with to acclimate myself more with mechanical work. When I bought the car, the mufflers had been cut off and what was left of the exhaust rattled and made horrible noise. So I finally took the car today to have new mufflers put on it and when I picked it up it sounded amazing. The a/c has never worked well, but it worked well enough to make a difference, and since it was hot today I had it running. I drove about 15 miles around town and it ran and sounded amazing. When I got home I let the car idle for a while with the a/c on, as I stood outside the car admiring it's new sound. When I got back into the car to turn it off, I noticed the temp was a little higher than it normally runs but nothing outside what I understand temperatures for this cars to be. It was at 228. I sat there for a minute to see if the temp would drop but it maintained at 228. So I turned the car off and went in the house. Within 5-10 minutes I heard a loud "pop". I ran outside and popped the hood and the underside of the hood and the engine was covered and what looks and feels like oil, all concentrated on the passenger side. Fearing an engine problem I began going through it. Eventually I saw where the lines bolt on to the back of the a/c compressor had blown off. The bolt is mia nowhere in the engine compartment or on the ground. Out of curiosity I started the engine, which started right up with nothing outside of the ordinary and good oil pressure. However it immediately started giving off white smoke. Not super thick smoke, but very noticeable long before the car reached a temperature of what I believe hot enough to burn anything off. Is this just a matter of replacing what blew out and possible a new compressor or is this signs of something more severe as well? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.
