I'm going to attempt removing the console on my '96 so I can complete my interior switch, I wish I had a FSM (assuming it would have directions). My mechanic put a new shift plate, boot and shift **** if when I 1st got the car. My concern is removing the clip in the shift **** and breaking plastic tabs.
Does anyone have tips or step by step directions for this project?
This applies to auto:
Do you have a set of snap ring plyers ? You will need those. Use a very small flat blade screwdriver and pop the button out of the shifter ****. Then using the snap ring pliers,
remove snap ring. The **** pulls straight up. Might need a little help.
I printed off part of the master sheet for installing a radio. It has pictures about removing the console plate. Not 100 percent there, but should get you going. Tells where the hidden screws are.

I can't help you with the shift **** because my 96 is an automatic. You need to pull up the tiny bit of carpet in the storage area under the armrest. There are two 7mm hex head self-theading screws you need to remove (one of these holds the metal striker tab for the console lid latch). You will also need to remove all the screws attaching the console lid to the console and lay it back on your cargo self (you can leave the wire for the console lid attached). Remove your cup holder/ashtray inserts and remove the single screw you will find there. Lift up the shifter bezel toward the rear and remove the two power connectors from the yellow hatch release button. The shifter bezel should now freely lift up from the rear. If not, check for any 7mm screws you missed. With the rear of the bezel tilted up, slide it back about an inch. This will pull the slots at the front of the shifter bezel free from their locking tabs. Now, lift the bezel and shifter boot up and off the shifter shaft.
Try not to worry about breaking plastic, I guarantee you will find plenty of broken and cracked plastic waiting to be discovered! God I know I found plenty in my Vette! 😂
