Just because the plate on the TB says Grand Sport, people who sell them try to claim it is a Grand Sport.

Anything other than a blue with white stripe is just a 96 Vette. Some might have an LT1, others might have an LT4.

Yep, all 1996 6-speed manual transmission Corvettes got the LT4 engine.
And all 1996 LT4 Corvette engines have that Grand Sport plate on the throttle body.
It does not make the car a Grand Sport though.

This is the only true way to tell a real GS!
Lots of people will paint a car, and even paint an intake manifold Red.
It is much harder to fake the VIN

Look at the 12th character of the VIN
1 = Regular Corvette
6 = Grand Sport

This is probably a dumb questions but can the Grand Sport package be added to a non GS car? Whats all included in that package?

While you could certainly put GS pieces on a non-GS car, it would not make it a GS. As stated by others, the GS cars had their own unique VIN's. They were a separate model in the C4 line.

it would not have GS pedigree but would in essence be a GS would it not?

Isnt tire width a major difference on GS cars?

You might consider investing $20.00 a get yourself a copy of Mike Antonick's "Corvette Black Book". It has the answers to every question that you've put forth and the next dozen that you will have. It contains two pages of details for each year of corvette production. Makes it real easy to see what options were available each year (how many were sold) and what equipment that was optional early on became standard in later years. Of even more interest is the book "Corvette From The Inside" This tells the story of the design and development of the C4.

GS was a graphics package, wider rear wheels and tires with fender flares, and special VINs. If you dont care about the VIN, you can replicate everything else easily and inexpensively.

if its just graphics the only thing i would be interested in is the wider wheels with flared fenders.

GS was just graphics and it had to have sport seats. If all you want is the fender flares and wider wheels... yes you can add those
