Question about a Targa top
Hi guys. I ended up getting a 1984 roller and I wanted to pull the targa top off to see if it could be repaired to use on my 86. When I look at the front there are 2 levers, one on each side. I can slide them left and right but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If it is a late 86 it may have the second generation top.

The C4 targa tops never came with release slide levers, on any of the three designs. They were always mounted with torx screws you need the "special" tool to remove and install. Judging by your picture of the lever and the surrounding custom upholstery work on the header, it looks like your car has some customized gizmo installed that you will have to try to figure out (like you didn't know that already). 
What happens if you slide that lever to either side and pull outward? It would seem there would be some kind of fail-safe designed into that set up to keep the top from being accidentally left in the unlocked position, and thus leaving yourself vulnerable to your own personal :flying top".
