heater control vavle

I believe 1984 and 85 did not have the nipple on the heater pipes, and 1986 and 1987 definitely did. On my '87, I was still able to get the SMP 74800 but as you found those are no longer available.
When my '86 started leaking this spring, I I took a different and much more affordable approach. As I wished to keep the nipple in place for the line to the intake manifold, I purchased a and installed it like so:
I think I paid a little over $8.00 at the time for the valve and I already had some 5/8" & 3/4" heater hose to plumb it in. It worked PERFECTLY all summer long - as I expected it would. I saved a bundle and I will never have to worry about a leak there again.
The 74800 has FOUR ports, and includes the coolant bypass tube, so the tube that Red86 is calling the "nipple" is not required. I don't know how this "nipple" water tube is connected in your '87.
I used the entire 74800 valve in my '84. The hose from the back of my intake manifold, which is fed from the back of the heads. goes directly to my new valve. The outlet hose from the heater core goes thru the valve to my water pump. When the valve is OFF, coolant flows thru the bypass tube of the 7400, but not thru thru the heater core. When the valve is ON, coolant flows thru the heater core, but not thru the bypass tube.
