I found a 1993 80000 miles. Seller says when fresh cold start runs great. Want to hot start it wants to miss and backfire and not run so good. He has replaced wires it says his mechanic is telling him it needs a distributor does that sound correct the cars beautiful I'd like to buy it
It has an optispark, not a standard distributor. I would say it could very likely be the icm or coil, which are both easier to replace, or possibly a connector. Worst case, the opti can be changed out in an afternoon. If you like the car, go for it! They are great cars, and easy to work on
Are you getting a code or seeing the SES light? This was a coolant temp sensor issue on my '93. Started well and then start running really rich as the sensor was reporting something like -55 degrees. It's a simple and inexpensive fix.
I agree with @gdgeorge some more trouble shooting is in order before replacing the Optispark. The fact is starts and runs leads me to believe it is temp related and therefore is not the Optispark. Temp sensor and coil seems like a solid place to start. This issue could be a great negotiating point. Let us know if you end up picking it up.
I have a 93 with the same problem. If I push the gas pedal all the way to the floor when it's hot it will start right away if not I have to crank 4 or 5 seconds before it starts. It's either the temp sensor that's in the water pump or the fuel injectors are leaking and need replaced. I just bought it last August and will wait until I get it out for the summer to work on it.

Sounds like what mine is doing. If it's a hot start it will often rpm at about 200 or less for a fraction of second then rev back to the normal 1,000 then down to 500. Other times she'll just gag for a bit while starting.

The fuel injectors can be a cause of this as well. They tend to short out, not a good design as later injectors. Oscilloscope can very this as long as someone knows how to use it.
Went and drove the car today. It needs some TLC but seemed like a solid car. We chatted for a bit found we had a lot in common . he really reduced the price the more we got to know each other. He is 80 years old and a very sharp guy
