Default Will 285 tires fit on a 92'?

I bought my 92' Vette without knowing what tires were right for the year.. After a little research, I found out I have 97' wheels. Front are 245/45ZR17 and the rear are 275/40ZR18. I found a set off of a 94' which are 255/45ZR17 on front and 285/40ZR17. Just wondering if anyone ever put the 285's on the rear without any modifications?? Stock for a 92' are 275/40ZR17 all around.
Thanks,

On my 93 285 is the stock size so you should be fine, but there is only like 2 choices in that size

Yeah, the base wheels for the 93-96 C4s was 17x8.5 front and 17x9.5 rear, with the tire sizes you have. The ideal was to reduce tramlining and give a cushier ride. However, these are not ideal tires/wheels for handling, and the selection is really slim in those tire sizes. I would pass on those wheels and look for a set of four 17x9.5s, which is what would have come stock on your car. Then you can get 274/40/17 tires at all four corners. If you simply must get this set of "staggered" 8.5/9.5 wheels, then you should consider 245/45/17 front tires and 275/40/17 rear tires when it's time to replace them. Those fit well and will give you lots of choices.

Since you have c5 18 inch rear wheels it's a little different. 275 appears to be the widest tire on 9.5 wheel. For 285 or 295 a 10 inch is minimum suggested. Now a 285 /35 18 will fit on the wheel and probably won't have any adverse effects. The 35 profile gets the tire diameter down close to the stock 25.7 diameter. The 93-96 had a 285 40 on a 9.5 wheel just saying.

He's trying to replace the wheels he has with 17" C4 wheels.

However, to Kevova's point (sort of), if the OP likes the C5 wheels that are on his car, then the tire sizes that are on it now are correct in terms of both width and diameter for a C4 with those C5 wheels. They will function well and you have lots of tire choices in those sizes. So there is no functional reason to change them - only if you don't like the way they look. They may have a little more offset than stock C4 wheels (I couldn't find a solid source quickly, so check your actual wheels). If so, you might prefer the looks (and they would gain a little cornering grip) by pushing them out a bit with spacers.
