I replaced the window sweep outer weatherstripping at the top of both doors on my ‘95 coupe about a year ago. Within a few weeks I had issues with gummy streaks left on the outside of windows after they were rolled down and noticed the windows didn’t move up and down freely. I recently found time to remove the inner door panel to track down the problem and found that the fuzzy material on the guides riveted to the window side of the sweep was peeling off. It looks like the fuzzy material on the guides curls along the edges when the window goes up and down and exposes the adhesive meant to hold the material to the metal. The adhesive then transfers to the window leaving gummy streaks. Unacceptable.
I was kicking myself for having bought the replacements from a flea bay seller and assumed they were made from inferior materials. Yesterday I took delivery of replacements for my replacements, this time purchased from a reputable seller but they look like they’re made just like the others! Has anyone had similar problems? Do I need to buy GM OEM for $75 each? What would you do?
Those felt guides probably got some grease or the sticky substance that holds the plastic sound guard on it. You will likely need to remove and replace or at least clean with an acrylic cleaner to fix
I bought my outer sweeps from a Corvette/Camaro/Firebird parts seller on Amazon. All of these are probably made by the same company and thus have the same issue. I even adjusted the felt covered brackets on the inner door as far away as possibly from the window but it still happened. Either a stronger adhesive needs to be used or a redesign of the sweep needs to be done. I posted by results on the product's Amazon page. Below a screen shot. I am thinking with time the adhesive will eventually all go away but I have sold the car so I am not sure how long it will take.
Hardway, thanks for your reply. At least I know I’m not the only one! I don’t think I have the patience to wait it out. I may replace the sweeps and reinforce the felt adhesive with some glue. Wish me luck 👍
I think you pretty much answered your own question, buy garbage for next to nothing and keep chasing the problem or spend the money on an OEM part and be done with it. I’ve got 2 set of the GM parts in my stash and will buy more when I find them.

First, at $64.50 shipped these sweeps were not "next to nothing" and they are not garbage, it is design flaw on one part of the sweep, not the whole thing. Second, I would have loved to have bought OEM pieces but other owners reported other problems with those too. Third, you cannot even find OEM versions right now so re-production parts is the only option. If you have a source on where to find the OEM versions please share it.
This is the one you want. I've used these before on 3 of my C4s and have had zero issues, perfect fit and finish. Yes, they cost more, but only doing the job once makes it worth it.
Follow up: I removed the failing sweeps. But before I installed the $60/pr. replacements that were manufactured in the same substandard way, I rolled back the edges of felt covered tape on the guides and gave them a generous but precisely applied coating of epoxy glue. I let that dry overnight and installed. So far, so good. Undoubtedly the $120/ea. sweeps are better, but I was determined to use what I had, hope I don’t regret it.
