Default Exhaust modification question

1989 automatic. No engine modifications

I have stock exhaust, except no cats. I want to run muffler delete pipes, but afraid it might be a touch to loud. I am installing headers, and I was thinking of installing one straight through glass pack type muffler where the main cat use to be. I am wondering if it would quiet it down a touch? Just for info I watch Engine Masters the other day in which they were testing engine horse power with chambered, turbo and straight through mufflers. Of course the straight through produced the best results. Watch it if you get a chance. They also did one one single exhaust vs dual, and 2.5 vs 3 inch exhaust.

I am trying To lose as little horse power as possible, spend as little as possible and quiet car down. What about a high flow cat? Any thoughts?

Figure the cheapest option is to have muffler delete pipes welded in. If too loud you can add a muffler/glasspack/x-pipe or whatever works for you.

I happen to think L98 sounds great on muffler delete.

Heres a good video of a TPI car with cats and muffler delete.

Nothing like a 13 second car with open exhausts.

Looks like you want it all? What I did to a previous 89, was remove the pre-cats, put in a hi perf cat and leave the OEM mufflers. I felt a real SOP improvement for about $350. It was also the best sounding car (yes, even better than my LT5 with SW headers and Corsa) that I ever had. This is the best bang for your buck.

Add headers to that combo and you will get more out of it on the top end, but you wont notice that much on low end. The L98 is a low end torque monster. Save your money.
