1996 Coupe. What causes this carpet bulging and uneven appearance (both sides)? Appears original carpet. I can't flatten it, it returns to misshapen form. Back where latch is , is also wavy and uneven. Anyway to fix this short of a new carpet? Thanks Steve

Age & heat. The carpet has nylon in it which is essentially plastic. Plastic deforms from heat... lots of heat in the hatch area... I have never been able to fix that problem. Bought new or good used carpet to remedy.
Yeah, age and heat. You may have some water leaks around the hatch corners...not uncommon. Also, carpet likely removed and pulled back and left like that for a while for something like rear speaker repair, antenna replacement , etc. you can take liquid expoxy or even fiberglass resin without the mat clothes to spread on the back of the carpet, when it sets up but before it is dry you can "mold it to the shape you want then hold it or brace it there for about 30 minutes and the shape will be retained. Depend on your amount of patience and desire to keep OE carpet....which yours looks good BTW.
