87 Sport seat with the power controls on seat hit me right in the lower hip area. Has anyone just taken those out and put the control under the seat? I want to take out the foam from those lower bolsters so it is wider and don't have to contend with the metal control box grinding in my leg. I thought about taking out the outer foam from around the boxes also to get more width.

I feel your pain!
What I did was buy a pair of standard seats for a 95 base car and swapped them into my ZR-1. Also, if you want to keep the sport seat option, a set from a 95/96 sport seats will provide room. AND...then there's the option of having the seat rebuilt at a custom upholstery shop. Whichever way you go, no need to put up with that pain!'
Jason @ Vette2Vette.com may be able to fix you up with some seats.
This is the exact reason that I have avoided early C4's with the sport seats. I think finding a standard seat bottom would be your best bet as other have stated. It's a double edged sword as it would no longer be original (if you're into originality) and the cost would be something to consider. But on the other side of that would be much more comfort when driving!
I'm a smaller guy, so I love the early sport seats as they fit me like glove, but if your a larger person, i'd say the easiest route is getting some base model seats from the late C4's, should provide the room your needing.
