Default Possible New C4 Owner Here

Greetings,

This would be my first Corvette to own, so I have a few questions. The odometer says it only has a little over 22,000 miles. When the ECM was replaced I'm assuming that the odometer was wiped clean, I get that. It's really a pretty clean car, normal wear and tear which is expected for a '93. It has had quite a bit of work done to it by a previous owner. On my test drive yesterday I did notice some steering wheel shake when it went over a bump, like a ball joint wearing out or something that needs to be replaced. What could it be to cause that?

That won't stop me, I'll have it checked out and fixed. It has plenty of power with no smoke with my foot in it. If anyone has any tips, you know the drill. I'm very mechanically inclined, so nothing scares me. In my 70 years I have built several cars and also my 1968 Silver Eagle into a Motor Home.

Beautiful color combination! The $8500.00 price is good on a 1993 convertible in this condition also.

Think wheels are on backwards - wonder why?

I didn't notice that until now. Tire rotation? Good point!

The reason should not be due to tire rotation as the tires are different size and uni-directional and should not be rotated.

Interesting. I checked the sizes and they were all the same size. What size should they be?

I just found this. I assume this is correct.

Coupe / Convertible
P255/45ZR17 (Front)
P285/40ZR17 (Rear)
(Goodyear Eagle GS-C Steel Belted
Directional, Asymmetrical)

Seems to be a good price for that car. Love those 90's colors.

I believe that is correct. See page 283 of your owners manual for advice on tire rotation (summarized, don't do it).

1993 came with 275-40-17 tires on all four corners.

Although my 93 owner's manual (pg 283) says they are different sizes and should not be rotated, the specs on the corvette museum does confirm they are the same size. My 93 coupe has different front and rear sizes but they, of course, are not OEM.

Under the lid of the center console is the SPID sticker. It will tell you all the options that were on the car as it was built. There should be XAU and YAU which will indicate the 275/40/17 tires front and back.

Continuing to beat the 93 tire size horse, I just checked the door label on my 93 Ruby for tire size and it lists different tire sizes for front and rear:

P255/45ZR17 (Front)
P285/40ZR17 (Rear)

Not sure why the owner's manual and the door label would specify different tire sizes for front and rear, while some specs show P275/40ZR-17
all around. Any opinions as to why the difference?

My option list shows:
XAA Front tire P255/45 ZR17
YAA Rear tire P285/40 ZR17

Was that an option that the original owner could select instead of the same size tires all around?

Some people like the saw blades pointed forwards ve backwards. They look more like claws then.

I know that for some model years the 255/45/17 with a 8.5 x 17 rim was the “base” tire for the front but if the Z51 or ZO7 option was ordered the car came with 275/40/17 all around. I do know this was changed at some point but I am not certain of exactly when this changed.

Any NCRS guys out there care to chime in?

The factory standard corvette(1993-1996) came with 17x8.5 width wheels in the front and 17x9.5 wheels in the rear. Previous models had 9.5 inch on all 4 corners. It is desirable to have the 9.5 inch on all 4 corners for rotation purposes. For tire purposes go to the 275 size for availability and better prices. Not much selection on the 285 size. The sawblades in reverse is no big deal and you could address that issue when you buy new tires. ALLOWED TIRE RANGES--- FRONT FACTORY245-265/40-50X17 REAR 275-285/35-45X17. If you have the 9.5 inch wheels on all for corners , then pay attention to the REAR ONLY. Good luck. buy the car, have fun, you are going to wish you did this years ago.

I am no expert, but I read on another thread that the sawblades were designed to help cool the brakes and thus should be in the original forward position. is that just BS or can anyone confirm?
