Default ? about convertibles?

Hi -I had a possible dumb question. I've been looking at a few C4 convertibles (my wife mentioned she'd want a convertible).
and have been looking at a few...drove a convertible C4 a few years ago that I liked, but didn't really ask many questions about it when I did.

My main question: is the access to the "trunk space" is it just accessible from behind the seats?

I don't think i've seen a picture of a C4 Convertible , of a trunk lid lifting up to access it. is this correct?

I know I've read on here the size of cargo/trunk space vs. the hatchback models, ie: the convertible has a bit less space.
just wanted to confirm that you access the space from behind the seats. thanks,

That is partially correct... There is no trunk lid you open from the rear. There is a hatch/panel you raise from the front of the rear deck that allows you to fold down the top. While you can raise that lid with the top up you still have to unlatch and lift the back of the top forward to allow this. This means that loading with the top up is from the inside folding the seats forward. With the top down there is little to no room behind the seats for much of anything.

When I had C4, and took it on trips, I always sent care package to the hotel I was staying with clothes for long haul, and when leaving mailed home the dirty cloths, and at the next hotel had another package waiting of cloths, came in handy that was traveling light to lower the top on trip.

Watch this video. It will give you some idea. I have owned an 87 and a 96 vert, Note that if you leave the top up then you can easily load/unload the rear cargo area. Simply cut a dowel (I used an old arrow) to the correct length. With the top clamped down in front, lift the rear of the top up and hold it there. Pop the rear lid and lift it up to its full height. Place the dowel between the lid and the rear/bottom bow of the top. You now have plenty of room without using 3 hands.

The C4 coupe has a LOT more cargo space than the convertible. Even with the top up, the convertible's cargo space is very limited. With the top down, it's even less. Two duffel bags might be too much, depending on their size.

I keep a partial roll of paper towels in the convertible car. When loading cargo, I raise the rear of the ragtop, open the storage lid, hold the rear of the convertible top up, and place one end of the roll of paper towels against the center of the upper edge of the lid, and then let the rear edge of the ragtop down until it rests against the other end of the roll. That holds things open while my hands are both free to load cargo carefully.

If you're going to drop the top with some cargo loaded, be very careful to make sure there is still room for the top to fold down and the lid to close above it.

Live well,

SJW
