In the early stages i saw a engine displayed at the museum in 2001 that used Mobil 1. Mobil 1 compared a base oil to there oil with just a filter change at manufactures specs . There oil showed the internals of the motor with no wear , the other lots of wear and failure at 250,000.miles. This was at a NCRS Convention . The extended life oil they make must have something extra in it to be almost twice the price.

Are you talking about the Extended Performance or Annual Protection formula? EP is maybe $1-2 more than regular Mobil 1 per 5-quart jug. AP is/was nearly twice the price but is being discontinued and the EP formula will fill that slot in the product lineup. I still don't see why they bothered with the AP formula, must be another example of using marketing to fool people into buying a product... didn't work this time.

I totally agree. All that content is garbage.

Yes it is a quality oil. Any oil with the American Petroleum Institute starburst or circle emblem is acceptable. On the package back is a emblem with API and some number as well as the letters indicating the standard it meets. example SG (note the letters are in order so the SG also meets the SF and earlier requirements.)

Also the oil recommendation is for NEW cars. Note the different oils for other years. Do you think GM calculate a recommendation oil for a 27 year old engine wear and tear. Heavier oil will fill in the extra space from a lot of miles. You also have ambient air temperature above 70 degree at all times for the next few months. If your oil pressure is low you'd may want a slightly heavier oil. What's you oil pressure?

High mileage oils have additives to swell seal. May stop a leaking seal but will cause good seals to leak. How many miles does your car have?

You won't drive enough miles for a difference to be seen and are better off putting your energy/$ into making sure you have a working cooling system, looking for leaks, flushing brake fluid, and reducing cold starts/ short drives will pay off.

I prefer Castrol for technical reason I can't remember right now but really I buy the brand on sale that meets the API standard.

Oh, and insuring the oil filter is filled with oil prior to installation, the old oil is fully drained, and not running low oil levels will do more protection than which brand.
