I was driving yesterday and went to turn on the lights and I was down one - door would not open. everything was working fine last week - but as to be expected surprise - I was grateful to the sheriff I drove by that paid no attention to me -
when I got it home I tried to manually open the door - and I could feel the motor turning still and started to make a grinding sound - like it was trying to work. I have changed the gears on both sides twice in the last 5 years - cleaned and greased every time and they have worked nicely - then not so much - frustrating to say the least - last year also changed all of the relays -
sounds like the same issue I just do not remember the motor still trying to run (not when I cut power by the way) - I feel like this is more obvious than I am making it -
I found this in an old post of Cliff Harris - "If the headlight is not moving or hesitates then the gears are probably bad.
The second time mine failed the headlight worked OK with the hood in the normal position but wouldn't turn if the hood was up.
I think there is a problem with the way the gears mesh in my driver's side headlight mechanism. It has stripped the white gear twice. The passenger side has been fine for 27 years. I couldn't figure out a way to adjust this, so ???"
Is there an additional adjustment - If I remember correctly there was not much play if any with the white gear - ?
thanks - I have changed them - I am not sure why they have needed changed multiple times in the last few years - I have bought replacement gears from zip (so not a no name )- I know they make the brass gears - but have stayed away because I read that because mine did not come with those in the first place, brass may cause stress on the motors(?) - I have even started to look at fixed light options - of course I had a heart attack with the price - but to avoid this every couple of years . . .

Sorry, I missed the part that you said you rebuilt them. Seems strange they keep giving you grief. Something on that side could be out of alignment and causing it to slightly bind and over time, fail. Just a thought.
thanks - I will definitely be looking a little more closely at the action of everything when I take it apart and begin to reassemble - gotta be something to this
