Default Instrument Clusters

Will a 96 instrument cluster fit and work in a 92 vet?

Are you handy? I have a '96 cluster and DIC in my '90, but it required some creative wiring changes.

I have a 94 but the color was different. Not sure if it matters to the OP. What creative wiring are you talking about? I found that the warning lights around the dash like the shift, check gauges, door ajar, brake, etc are different. So you would have to somehow get the wiring diagram and shunt it to the right spot?

Exactly. As long as you have the wiring diagram (in the service manual) the cluster wasn't bad. I think it was only 2 or 3 trace cuts and jumpers. The DIC was a little more involved and in hindsight probably not worth it. Also, the 90/91 have a different LCD than the later ones, but the early LCD plugs into the later cluster no problem.

So are you saying that the wires just need to be rewired to different places on the connector because the locations are in different places on the different years? If you had both wiring diagrams you could make this work? Sounds easy, but hard at the same time.

Yes, and it was just warning lights on the top that were different as the later clusters added a couple. You can just install the later cluster and see what lights up when you, pull the ebrake, etc. The gauges should all work. At your own risk of course.

Well I have the wiring diagram for my 92 in the shop manual. Anyone have the wiring diagram for a 96 cluster? Sounds like a project, but I'll give it a try.

Installing a 92-96 cluster into a 90-91 is a completely different task than putting a 96 cluster into a 92.

The detailed information that is prided for oil/coolant temp and other finctions from the DIC are not provided for in the 90/91 and require rewire.
