Anyone here tried to see what Carmax would give you for your C4? Mine is a 94 in excellent shape and they offered 5500. I think this is extremely low ball for how good of shape mine is with 67k. Even the guy there said I would be better selling it privately.
I follow a guy on YouTube with two C4's. He took the older one with just over 100k and if I remember he was offered just over $2000. They're a dealer just like all the others, they need to make $$$ or they won't be in business for very long. If you're desperate at least you know you can get the cash but yes, better off selling privately.

ALWAYS better off selling privately. Any dealer wants to make money, so they'll lowball you so they have profit room later.
Carmax takes the cars to auction, they expect to make a grand or so there, then the dealer that buys it will sell it himself for another grand or two over that price.
I try to avoid the dealership for anything. Buying, selling and maintenance....unless of course it is a warranty item. You can save a ton of money with a little patience.
believe it or not, local Chevy is giving me 7100. I am going to hopefully get the new car on Wednesday. They had to ship it in from FL.
IDK what your car is actually worth but it's common for dealers to give out a "high" trade value for your car....it's makes you feel good about the transaction. Don't worry though....they stick it right back to you by rolling it into the purchase price of the new car.
They're not a charity, so they aren't going to give you $7100 for a $7100 car, (a car they can likely only resell for $7100), and not get you some other way. The other way is in the new car purchase package.

Look at eBay and see what comparable cars SOLD FOR and not the rest which is wishful thinking.
Can I get more by selling it privately? Absolutely. Can I save more by doing the work myself? Absolutely. See where this is going? Now are you willing to deal with people who are not necessarily buying? Making appointments to show, have them try to lowball you, etc, etc? Remember, you are asking me to drop $X in cash or take out a HELOC or credit card loan to pay you. I don't know how many banks will be financing a 20 year old car that isn't really valuable. If you put it on eBay, you also have to contend with eBay fees. I guess it all depends on you and how tolerant you are for this sort of shenanigans. I'd have to see what it sold for on average and figure in the fact that this is the end of the driving season and I have to buy presents for my kids, the family, etc, etc. Maybe March if you want to aggressively sell? This is the time for me to buy a boat but I'd prefer not to sell one unless I am hardup.
